We welcome clients of diverse age, culture, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability and socioeconomic status. Adlerian counselling focuses on the understanding of the unique individual and the cognitive schema's they create in childhood. Adlerian counsellors focus on the unity of the individual, goal orientation, self-determination, uniqueness, and an individual's feelings towards being accepted in a community.
Alfred Adler pioneered positive parenting strategies which include natural and logical consequences, encouragement and mutual respect. Here at The Adler Centre we work to promote his vision of creating capable, resilient and creative children through Adlerian concepts and principles such as mutual respect, social interest, psychological birth order, cooperative problem solving, the four goals of misbehaviour and the family meeting.
Currently we offer an 8 week parenting group that is based on the highly regarded S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training in Effective Parenting) method. The group explores strategies for dealing with the challenges of being a parent. The STEP program covers topics such as: Encouragement, Parenting Styles, Family Constellation, Goals of Behaviour, Problem Solving, Communication, Promoting Capability and Positive Discipline.
The Edna Nash Fund was established by the Adlerian Psychology Association of BC (APABC), housed here at the Adler centre, in order to honour our inspiring and much loved founding member. Funds donated will be used to provide parent education to those who would not otherwise be able to attend.
We have found that many people happily step forward to pay for the costs of a Parenting Workshop on behalf of parents, either as a gift, or with the understanding that the parents will pay them back over a period of time.Friends and family have also been in a position to offer childcare once a week in the evening for a couple of hours.
