Statistics show that at the end of 2012, over 300,000 temporary foreign workers were living and working in Canada. The biggest concentrations of foreign workers are in Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia, where the demand for their specialized knowledge, skills and managerial experience were the most critical.
The process of getting a work permit starts with the employer's Labour Market Opinion application. By way of the LMO application, and only after advertising the available position, the employer must demonstrate to Service Canada (HRSDC) that a temporary foreign worker is required to fill the job opportunity.
