The Old Mill Hub, formerly known as the Mill Street Mall, will be our new home in September. We can't wait! It's certainly been a topsy-turvy time, hasn't it? How's your little one doing after enduring lockdowns and uncertainty? How are you doing? It's exciting that restrictions are lifting, that we can hug each other again, that we can enjoy a meal together, but it is also totally normal to have some anxiety about what's ahead.
We are entering into a new "normal" and with that, comes ups and downs. Maybe being physically close to people makes you a little nervous now, maybe your child is anxious about playing with other children or even about going to school. You may need some support and we're here for you.

In 2004, John and Elyse decided to take Johanis' Karate School in a new direction. Elyse was eager to transition her social work experience into a progressive Martial Arts School. John, retired from Sport Karate Competition, was ready to infuse his desire and passion into an updated curriculum to their style of Kempo Karate.
Kyoshi John Johanis is a Seventh-Degree Black Belt in Kempo Karate and a Black Sash in Chuan-Fa (Shaolin Kung-Fu) under Hanshi John Atkinson in the Canadian Karate Kung-Fu Association (CKKA). A martial arts instructor for over 26 years, he has taught programs across Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
Raised in Orangeville, Elyse has extensive experience working with both individuals and families. She is a York University graduate (2000) and holds a Specialized Honours Degree in Psychology. Her undergraduate thesis found correlations between body image, self-efficacy, and disordered eating.
Utilizing a Milieu therapeutic approach (community based therapy) with adolescents and children with eating disorders, Elyse completed her fourth-year practicum at the Hospital for Sick Children.Elyse is proud to have contributed to the Youth Transitions Project, gathering research for Dr. Debra Pepler and Dr. Jennifer Connelly of the Lamarsh Centre for Research on Violence and Conflict Resolution.

Kyoshi John's black belts and certificates are proudly displayed in the dojo for everyone to see. However, many ask why there is a white belt displayed alongside? Well, in 1994 John earned his second degree (Nidan) black belt. A year or so later, in the summer of 1995, his car was stolen.
When the police returned his car, all his belongings were gone, including his cherished Black Belt! John couldn't bring himself to buy one as his black belt was an accomplishment that was priceless to him, and therefore irreplaceable. With this in mind, John put on his white belt again and continued training.

Recreational Program: We really like to see our students for a minimum of two days a week, but we understand life can be very busy. So, one day is better than no days; that's why we offer the Recreational Program. Students participate in one class per week. If you miss your class, let us know and we'll find you another class for you that week.
