The Jiyu-Shin Karate School is the oldest karate club in Peterborough, founded by Sensei Mark Bell in 1972. Several of Sensei Bell's first black belts still teach and train. Chito-Ryu is our formal style of karate. We also incorporates aspects from other martial arts into our curriculum. I do karate now because: I enjoy breaking down technique I have performed over the year and am still able to find way to improve how I perform the techniques.
I do karate now because: I have trained and continue to train with many very good martial artists and I am honoured to continue from their example. Now, it is my way of life. I do karate now because: I am slave to the structure and the physicality of the martial arts, karate specifically.

Services
I started in the martial arts with Jiyu-Shin in 1990. My head instructor was Sensei Mark Bell, founder of the Jiyu-Shin Karate School. I received my Shodan in January of 1996. I was allowed to grade with my fellow black belt Tony Jones who came up through the ranks with me and allowed me to grow and learn with him.
This class is built for students aged 4 and 5 years old. This class provides students with a firm foundation to build on for martial arts as they age into our regular program. This class is built for students aged 5-16 years old, and includes all belts. This class provides students with the opportunity to learn and build on their foundations and learn techniques at a more complex level.

I brought my two daughers and my myself and droped in on a class. We were greeted and treated as equals. Some clubs accept a dropin but put little effort into watching the people that do drop in. We were given advice and guidence like we had trained side by side with them for years, for this we thank all members of Jiyu-Shin. This is truely a club that practices and believes in Karate-Do.

Writing a 'five star' reviews does not come easy to me as I am rather picky and more critical than others. However, this one is easy. The knowledge and patience the Senseis exhibit is reassuring for someone with no martial arts skills or experience, and their passion for the sport is contagious. Most of the time there a few black belts during the class teaching, demonstrating and assisting with the lower ranks. Their involvement makes it easier for an older person like myself to attend and learn. Highly recommend this club.

I am in my mid forties and not coordinated at all. Yet everyone at the dojo, especially the sanseis make me feel like I can do it, and I am alright. I guess I am... in a way.
If you are considering joining a martial arts club, you seriously need to take a closer look at this one. Once you do, you will not want to be anywhere else but here.
Every class there are a few black belt sanseis instructors, teaching, helping and correcting. Their passion for the sport is contagious and their patience for trainees like me heartwarming (now, that's just a woman talk, I know lol).
