My mother, Josephine Gibbons, attended to and treated the sick and the dying of the St. Mary's Bay area during the period of time when she was the district nurse - from the 1930's until she retired in 1975. My father, George Gibbons, supplied the materials for building caskets in his General Store in St. Mary's.
After the 2-3 day wake period (which was held in the home of the deceased) he would carry the casket in his truck to the church for mass and then to the graveyard. In the early 60's I became a Funeral Director. I used a station wagon as a hearse. On many occassions family members would express their desire to have a funeral home in the area.
