Mary Berglund pioneered the role of Nurse Practitioner, working in Ignace during the 1940s, 50s and 60s as the only health care worker within a radius of 110 kilometres. A graduate of the McKellar Hospital School of Nursing in Thunder Bay, Mary's home served as the first health centre in Ignace.
Her skills and professional commitment were soon recognized by doctors in the area who supported her work, providing her with access to medications and medical supplies.She is the only Nurse who has been received honourary membership from the Ontario Medical Association (1972). She received many other awards, including in 1986, an honourary life membership from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.

Our primary funder is the Northwest Local Health Integration Network, however we seek funding and have been supported by funding from Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport, Ministry of Infrastructure, and grants from government and other agencies such as the New Horizons for Seniors, offered through the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
The Mary Berglund Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization, governed by a volunteer board made up of people who live in Ignace. Enacts its role and responsibilities through the articulation of a vision, mission, values, strategic plan and appropriate policies. Are elected at an Annual General Meeting, normally held each September from candidates nominated from and/or approved by the membership.
MBCHC offers a variety of services. If you have a medical issue, need your annual check-up or are looking for health advice, we can help. To book a medical appointment please call our receptionist at 807-934-2251. She will ask for some basic key information and schedule an appointment with our health care providers.
MBCHC is a convenient, friendly health centre serving people in Ignace, and surrounding communities. We take the time to get to know you as a client, to ensure you are getting the care you need. We offer full programs and services integrated with the medical clinic to give you the physical, emotional and spiritual support you need to lead a healthy life.
To see the results of a test that you have had done at MBCHC we would ask you to please come to the health centre where we can provide test results to you in person. You should make an appointment with your provider. Call us at 934-2251. Our receptionist will ask you to provide key information and set up an appointment with your doctor or nurse practitioner.
