We enrolled our 6 year old son at Joe Fournier's Martial Arts. Overall, we appreciate the culture in this Dojo. Sensei Fournier is thoughtful, knowledgable and best of all available to his students. As he should, he sets high expectations for his students but ensures they have the tools required for everyone to achieve their individual success.
The Shorinji Ryu system taught at Joe Fournier's Martial Arts was created by O'Sensei Richard Kim. The system incorporates Karate, Kobudo, Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Jiu Jitsu, and more. O'Sensei believed that each art offered something to a well-developed martial artist. Thus the system of karate taught is known as Kim's Shorinji Ryu Karate and should not to be confused with Shorinji Kempo, or other systems that legitimately bear the name "Shorinji".
Various distinct styles emerged during the heyday of the Ryukyuan kingdom: Shuri-ti forms were centred in the Ryukuan capital of Shuri, Naha-ti in the commercial centre of Naha, and Tomari-ti in the Tomari district located between the first two. Each style had its distinguished masters who established the traditions preserved to our present day.
Self defence is less a fighting style and more a way of thinking. The singular premise being to survive the encounter. Drawing on a variety of sources, students of Sensei Fournier's learn a comprehensive set of self defence tactics that when put to the test can save lives. Make no mistake - you will not see flashy spinning kicks or board breaking.
