Elizabeth Fry Society-PTRBRGH
Working to end the criminalization of poverty, mental health, addiction, and domestic violence. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough provides gender responsive services and programs which focus on community interventions for individuals who have been or are at risk of being criminalized. We believe in the abolition of the prison system.

We initiate social action and foster community involvement and responsibility in efforts directed at social change, reform of the criminal justice system, and development of community alternatives to incarceration. We promote community awareness, knowledge and understanding of the issues faced by women involved in the criminal justice system and the conditions which contribute to women becoming criminalized.
Services
In 1986 in Peterborough, community organizer Pat Love established a steering committee. By 1987 the Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough had been founded, and by 1989 it was incorporated. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough has been advocating for human rights ever since.

Between 1994 and 2004 the number of women in prison increased by almost 200 percent and contributed to a significant increase in the number of criminalized women in need of community re-integration supports. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough responded by hiring a Court Support Worker, and by providing women with compassionate counselling, programming, and support and referral services.
Our mission is to end the criminalization of addiction, mental health, poverty and domestic violence. We believe that healing comes through community connections. Our Community Services includes a series of groups and 1:1 supportive counseling that addresses specific needs that may have resulted in or contributed to criminal justice involvement.
This program focuses on identifying the thought patters that are linked to inappropriate expression of anger and focus on developing self- management skills to appropriately express anger and frustration.

Clients participate in weekly 2 hours sessions where they learn skills associated with assertive communication, how to counter rationalizations and cognitive distortions with pro-social thinking, and how to resolve conflict in effective ways that maintain relationships. This program is designed to promote self-esteem & provide women with the ability to make healthier lifestyle and relationship choices.
The purpose of this program is to advocate for community alternatives to criminal justice sanctions. Our workers work directly with women who are accused to navigate the criminal justice system and to access resources in the community to address the underlying issues which may have contributed or resulted in criminalization.
This program delivers services at the Peterborough Regional Hospital and takes referrals for women and men who have overdosed or who have medical complications associated with their use of substances. It is a support program delivered by people with lived experience with the purpose of helping service users to navigate existing resources and create a circle of support.

My go to person has been nothing but FANTASTIC. She is a person who listens, genuinely caring. Whenever l need to talk she makes sure to be readily available, l don't have to wait long to get an appointment. I am sure she has much on her plate with her employment however, to sit and speak with her she makes you feel acceptable. As she mentioned whenever there is a need to talk to call. Even to go in and just spend time there. Much like a go to place. I gave the Society a 5 Star rating however if l could l would give them a 10 plus. I am sure many others would also Rate the Society a 5, l cant say
