However the easiest way to become a member is through organizing. Organizing allows you the ability to stay with your current employer and have your current company become unionized. It is against the law for an employer to dismiss or threaten you because you wish to join a union. To find out more information on how to organize your workplace or become a member, contact one of our representatives at 416-630-1160 or toll free at 1-888-630-0285.
As a member of Local 285, you are represented by dedicated officers and staff that are committed to improving the living standards of its members. Negotiating a fair collective bargaining agreement, enforcing your rights under such agreement and under the Ontario Labour Relations Act and promoting worksite safety are just few ways that local 285 represent its members.
Primarily, our local union sheet metal workers fabricate, assemble and install a variety of sheet metal products. A sheet metal worker remains one of the only building trades person to start with a raw piece of material, custom fabricate it and install it. Being employed in the residential sheet metal trade means you could be working in a shop environment or working on a job site in the high-rise or low-rise sector.
Our sheet metal workers are amongst the highest paid in our industry. Our workers receive a high rate of pay because they are highly skilled and are continuously trained in this evolving industry. Our piece work/incentive based program gives our workers a potential to earn a higher rate of pay which would allow them to exceed the hourly rate.
