Your septic tank is designed to keep solids, grease and oils from entering and clogging your drain field. Bacteria in the tank break down organic solids into gas and liquid. Some solids in the tank, such as sand, gravel, dirt, and bits of plastic cannot be broken down by any enzyme or bacteria. These settle out and accumulate, creating a layer of sludge at the bottom of the tank and requires periodic pumping to remove.
Sludge from waste deposited into your septic system settles to the bottom of your tank and the lighter particles form a crust on the top. The center of your tank should always be water; the water flows from the center of your tank through the outlet baffle and into the leaching field. If the septic tank isn't cleaned regularly, the sludge thickness increases until the water can no longer drain from your tank.
