Lynda Seigneuret was born and educated in Vancouver. She started her career in the Small Business Department at Peat Marwick, Chartered Accountants (now KPMG), providing accounting and tax services to small business clients. She obtained her C.G.A. designation in 1983. In the mid-80's Lynda was the controller of an engineering consulting firm with international operations.

In 1987 she left that firm to become a management consultant with the Peat Marwick Consulting Group. In this capacity she worked on a variety of assignments including preparing business plans and assessment reports for companies going public on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, developing training seminars and preparing financial forecasts for start-up businesses.

Under the Employment Insurance Act every person who works in Canada is required to have a SIN. As an employer, you must ask to see the SIN card of all new employees when they are hired, and the employee must show it to you within three days following the start date of employment.

It is important that you obtain the correct SIN of your employee so that you can make payroll deductions such as Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, and income tax.Also, you must record the SIN as it appears on the employee's SIN card. If you cannot ascertain the SIN of an employee, you must inform your local Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) office within six days following the start date of employment.
