He was a member of the Lynwood Animal Hospital family for 25 years and we will miss his cheerful personality. He came to us as a hand raised chick and he always recognized his human "mom" Louise and his avian dad Peanut when they would visit. He was our avian ambassador. In his younger years he enjoyed going to nursery school for show and tell and especially liked the goldfish crackers that the children would offer him.
Birds are masters of disguise, especially when it comes hiding signs of illness. That is why we recommend a physical exam every 6 to 12 months and regular blood testing throughout their lives. During the initial exam our veterinarian will review diet and care and discuss any health or behavioral concerns that you may have.
Small birds - If your bird's cage fits into your vehicle, then transporting him in familiar surroundings will cause the least stress. Alternatively, use a small box or cage with good ventilation and provide food for the trip. Make sure that you leave the papers on the bottom of the cage from the last 24 hours as the droppings provide important information.
Cover the carrier with a blanket. Don't tip or bump the carrier as you walk with it - hold the bottom. Warm up the car in winter and bring the car as close to the door of your home as possible - cats don't like the cold! Don't feed a meal before travelling (treats in the carrier are OK). Place the carrier on the floor where it can't move around.
