The company principals, Duncan Wyllie and Norm Norrish, have a total of 80 years experience in applied rock mechanics, and aim to bring innovative, timely and economic solutions to projects involving excavations in rock. Duncan C. Wyllie is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, the University of New South Wales, Australia and the University of London, and has a Ph.

D. from the Univeristy of British Columbia in Canada. He specializes in rock engineering and has worked in this field for nearly 50 years. During this time, he has been involved in a wide variety of railway, highway and industrial development projects in North and South America, Asia and the Middle East.
Services
We provide the following services: Investigation, Design, Specifications and Construction Inspection. Rock engineering of slopes on facilities such as railways, highways and power facilities must have a high degree of reliability and safety for the public. This requires that they be stable against both large-scale failure and rock falls.
Structures such as bridges and power transmission towers founded on rock may be located on steep slopes. Design issues for these conditions where the structural loads are highly concentrated, include the bearing capacity and stability of the foundation. Additional factors that can be detrimental to stability include ground motions due to earthquakes, and scour where there are high velocity flows at the foundation.
In mountainous terrain, rock falls may be a hazard to such facilities as highways, railways and power generation plants. We provide full services for the mitigation of these hazards including identification of rock fall sources, modelling of rock fall trajectories and energies, and design of protection structures.
Foundations on Rock is an up-to-date, practical reference book describing current engineering practice in the investigation, design and construction of foundations on rock. The second edition of this successful book has been extensively updated. The methods set out are readily applicable to high-rise buildings, bridges, dams, docks and structures subject to uplift and overturning loads.
Fully revised and updated, the fifth edition of this classic handbook, based on the original book by Evert Hoek and John Bray, comprehensively addresses the design and excavation of rock slopes, with particular emphasis on civil engineering applications.

Weathered rock - for projects in tropical climates, information is provided on the process of rock weathering, and the properties of weathered rock including shear strength related to weathering grade.Stability analyses of cut slopes in weathered rock in Brazil and Malaysia are included. Seismic design of rock slopes - the influence of seismic ground motions on rock slope stability, based on extensive documentation of past events, is reviewed.
