Upon emigrating from Devon, England, the Macklin family first settled in Northumberland County in 1832 and has actively participated in the community ever since. The family has been involved in the development of land and buildings in southern Ontario since 1959. The company has interests in agricultural and commercial properties in Cobourg and neighbouring Hamilton Township.

Other holdings include several retail units in the Strathy Road area. Linmac is the owner, developer and manager of more than 165,000 square feet of retail space which house over 60 tenants.

1943, Harold graduated from the University of Toronto and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers earning the rank of Captain before returning to U of T to begin his teaching career, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1985. 1951, Marshall Macklin Monaghan (MMM Group Limited), a civil engineering, surveying and planning firm and now one of the largest building services firm in Canada, was co-founded by Harold in Toronto.
