Services
We have ample free parking outside of the main entrance. Our hospital is entirely set on the ground level, although if you need assistance moving yourself or your pet into the building, just let our reception team know. Note: The main hospital door is locked at 12:00 am, but there is always an emergency team on-site at all times of the day.
Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital is a busy 24-hour small animal hospital serving most of Vancouver Island. Our spacious and modern hospital has emergency and surgical facilities, advanced dental equipment, ultrasound, endoscope, digital x-ray and an in-house laboratory. Based in Nanaimo, BC, we have been caring for cherished animals in our region for over nine years.
Many of our patients are unfortunate enough to require intensive care or extended hospital stays while they recover from a serious illness. Our dedicated team works around the clock to ensure that your pets receive the highest individual attention and care that they need to give them the best chance at recovery.
In some cases, patients require a surgical procedure to diagnose or treat their issue. We recognize that having pets undergo anesthetic procedures and surgery can be stressful for owners. Our team is here to answer your questions about any recommended procedures. Our veterinarians are experienced in emergency surgical procedures and see these cases day in, day out.
We have on-site rigid and flexible video endoscopy systems for diagnostic workup and treatment of conditions benefiting from minimally invasive procedures or where an additional imaging modality is needed. Endoscopic procedures are typically performed under anesthesia or heavy sedation. Our team will discuss with you in detail during case management if they feel endoscopy would benefit your pet's case.

We can’t Thank you guys enough for helping fix up Draco during the holidays. I know being short staffed is stressful enough add on holidays I was so pleased with the level of care and attention we received.… This led to me being reassured right away he was in the best hands. Of course he loved on everyone there, and I really appreciated the follow up care we received from being an emergency hospital you never made me feel rushed or a bother with my calls of concern. And I so appreciated the dr leaving different meds at the front New Year’s Eve knowing I wouldn’t of been

My dog got into something she shouldn’t have on our walk. I was up all night with her! The vets and other staff were amazing. Every time I called them with a question they were there to answer and were extremely reassuring. Thank you to Nicky and the other staff member who was working after Nicky (I’m sorry I forgot your name). You are amazing!

We brought our cat in during the Christmas holiday as he could not keep food down. We were not sure whether it was an emergency but phoned and received some advice from the front desk staff, who were excellent. Our cat is a bit of a demon at the vet's office as he gets very scared, so he was difficult to examine and had to be sedated. Thank you to the whole team, and Chey especially, for keeping our minds at ease while we waited. He was a low-priority case as he was stable and there were many more emergent cases coming in, but we were nervous nonetheless, and we appreciated the care, compassion

Thank you to Dr Parker, Dr Daniels and all the staff at CIVEH that saved my girl Mia! She ate a considerable amount of sugar free gum which contains Xylitol. Her liver levels were terrifyingly high. The staff here took such great care of her. Thanks to them my girl came home today after 72 hrs of care! We are lucky to have this hospital in our community.

We had an emergency situation with one of our pooches a few days ago. I couldn't get through on the phone to our regular vet or the emergency vet line. I was told about completing the form on their website for intake. We ended up rushing our pup to the clinic and because I had completed the online form and said what time we would be arriving there was someone there waiting at the door for her! They have such a busy hospital and service the entire North of Vancouver Island. Yet everything was smooth and fast. The processes that they have in place to triage and streamline care are very effective

Thank you everyone for your amazing care and compassion. I’ve had to bring both of my dogs into this clinic and both times I had amazing experiences. I received constant updates from the doctors which was very reassuring, and everyone was so friendly and willing to help during a very stressful time. Thank you Dr. Bell and Dr. Christie for all of your help, and all the staff that took amazing care of my babies!!

These people are amazing at handling tough situations. They took my dog ranger in immediately and gave me picture updates through email since he had to stay overnight and go out of their way to make sure… everyone gets what they need in a timely matter, I wish we had more places like this on the island 💖 my heart goes out all these amazing miracle workers!

Unfortunately our pup needed immediate emergency care. Central Island was extremely knowledgeable and were extremely patient in explaining our options to us. We dealt with multiple doctors and staff there over the period of 4 days. Each and everyone one of them were caring, knowledgeable and professional.
Dr. Westcott performed our dogs amputation. Everyone has remarked on the incredible job he did. It has been just over 2 weeks since her surgery and she is back to her old self again. I can't thank them enough for their expertise, the care of our dog and answering the multitude of questions we

On Thanksgiving Friday we had to rush our dog to CIVEH. She was coughing up blood. (Her own vet and Oncologist were not available as it was Thanksgiving. We panicked and called ahead. ) The receptionist was fantastic and took our information and said we would be taken in right away on arrival. We got there and they took our dog in. We told them… she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma(cancer), and had 5 rounds of chemo. They did a chest x ray and to make a long story short, told us to say our goodbyes as her lungs were full of cancer. We were devastated. We paid the over $900 dollar bill and

Incredible staff and emergency vet services. ⭐️ Thank you for saving Oliver! The kindness and compassion for our pet was just incredible. 🥰 We are so grateful for the amazing emergency services provided at… CIVEH. From the first frantic phone call, to our arrival at the centre, where staff ran out to our car to retrieve our injured dog, to the pick up, care instruction and reimbursement of a portion of our initial deposit, we were treated with patience and compassion. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! ❤️🩹 We are so grateful! 🙏

Brought my 11 month old lab Polly in with a blockage. The compassion for my girl was overwhelming. They kept me informed when they took her to surgery, during surgery and after surgery. I called often and they always greeted me with a cheerful voice. Drs. gave updates at least twice a day. When I phoned once I was told that one of the girls… was lying on the floor with her. Brought tears to my eyes when they told me that. They made the experience as reassuring as could be considering the stressful situation. Thank you CIVEH for saving my girl.
