At Bow Valley Dental we utilize a variety of professional technologies to help make your experience enjoyable & educational. We recommend a thorough oral examination by a dentist once every 6 months. During this examination, we will review your oral and overall health history. Examine your extra-oral structures including muscles and jaw joints. Assess your gums and other soft tissues for recession, inflammation, and abnormalities.
Night guards are designed to prevent you from grinding your teeth, and an athletic mouthguard is designed to absorb the shock of impact to your teeth. For these appliances to be as effective as possible, it's best to have them custom fit by your dentist. Teeth grinding can be a major problem for people.
Bacteria that cause plaque and tartar build up live on your teeth. Every time you eat you are feeding the bacteria as well as yourself. Once the bacteria have been fed, they produce a very strong acid that eats away at the enamel on your teeth. If you don't remove this layer of plaque by brushing and flossing, the bacteria will keep destroying your tooth structure until you get a hole in your tooth.
Missing teeth may cause you to appear more aged due to bone loss. They can also cause the movement of surrounding teeth and the gums to shift and shrink away from your remaining teeth. With this loss of alignment, your teeth can over-erupt or come out of their socket to attempt to close the space. If you wait too long and lose too much bone density, your jaw muscles shorten to accommodate the reduced space between your nose and your chin.
