Canadian citizens or permanent residents may sponsor their foreign spouses or partners to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. This is a two-step application in which the Canadian first applies to the government to be approved as a sponsor, then once that application is approved, the foreign spouse or partner applies for permanent residence on this basis.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their foreign-born dependent child or children to immigrate to Canada. A dependent child means a child under the age of 22 who is unmarried and not in a common-law relationship. The child may be your biological or adopted child. Be willing to sign a 10-year undertaking to be financially responsible for the child once he or she arrives to Canada.
The laws of common law partnerships vary from country to country. The rules governing such a relationship in Canada have an important effect on citizenship or permanent residency status. A citizen of Canada can make an application to sponsor their partner into Canada through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
The Express Entry system is not a category of immigration to Canada, but rather is a way of filing immigration applications. Instead of simply sending a completed immigration application to the relevant immigration office, potential applicants must first enter into a "pool" of potential applicants and wait to be invited to apply before they may submit their application.
