As they develop they normally challenge us as parents, testing limits and desiring freedom to test their decision making skills. With our support and guidance, they will take opportunities to be independent and grow more confident with each success they experience. But children can experience difficulties too.
Corinne oversees the care of clients at the clinic, supervises her team, provides consultation for parents and teachers, and trains students who are working towards becoming psychologists. She also works hands-on with clients and supervises the Training in Core Social Skills programs, as it brings her joy to see children grow in their ability to connect with others.
Last week at the parent meeting, Corinne asked me if I noticed if my son was using some of the stuff he learned in the program. The next night I got a little frustrated at him over something and he started to cry a little and said "mommy why are you using a mad voice" and again a couple of days later he said the same.
Many children learn to interact with others naturally, recognizing social cues, being able to be flexible in play, knowing what is expected in situations involving others, and being confident enough to go forward and get involved in a way that makes others feel good with them. But for many children, this does not come naturally.
There are times in life when everyone needs some support. For parents, there may be times when we feel we need some guidance in how to support our children through difficult times, or we may feel our child needs more support and expertise in areas they may be struggling than we can give them. We may also feel the need for support for our entire family, or just for ourselves as parents.
