Diego was born and raised in the small town of Hainichen near Dresden, Germany. At a young age his interest in gold was awakened by his father, a self-employed master engraver. In 1984, Diego began his training as a goldsmith's apprentice in one of the oldest goldsmith workshops in Chemnitz, Saxony founded in 1904.
Practical training in the goldsmith's workshop was accompanied by a degree course at the famous Goldsmith's College in Arnstadt, Thuringia. Traditional techniques for making jewellery of all types in gold, silver and platinum were the focus of the vocational education. However, great emphasis was also placed on the execution of repairs and alterations of old, sometimes antique pieces.
