Okuden Karate Jutsu focuses on practical self-defense against the full spectrum of interpersonal violence. Therefore, our training methods differ from those used by dojos with a competitive focus. All Karate emphasizes courtesy, perseverance, ethical conduct and loyalty. These timeless principles have established Karate as an effective path to mental, spiritual and physical health.

Aggressive and predatory individuals are often deterred by the quiet confidence and resolve of the serious martial artist. Avoiding violence though discernment and personal discretion is the safest way to negotiate conflicts and physical technique is always a last resort. That said, people have the legal right to use reasonable force in self-defense.
Services
In order to avoid or effectively manage interpersonal conflict (including potential violent assaults on your person), it is necessary to develop zanshin, the ability to live fully in each moment so you may be always aware of your environment. Zanshin is the ability to concentrate fully when necessary, ignoring all distractions.
The original circle and tiger symbol of our club derived from the instructors' early training in the modified Chito Ryu Karate that was introduced to Ottawa by the late Andre Langelier (Godan) in the 1960's. The symbol has since been changed to reflect our broader interesets. Mr. Langelier was a student of the Father of Canadian Karate, Masami Tsuruoka (Kudan).
Sensei Duchesney has been a proud student of Hanshi Paul Leonard (9th Dan) and member of his World Congress of Shintani Wado Kai Karate since 2003. As a young man was introduced to Shoalin Quan Fa (Kung Fu) while attending the Univeristy of PEI. He practiced the basic techniques of this system for a number of years before joining Sensei Alberto's Bernabo's ottawa dojo in 1991.
