It's not going to be your parents' retirement - rewarded at 65 with a gold watch, a guaranteed pension, and health insurance for life. For many peoples, retiring in this new century is a mystery. Earlier generations of workers could rely on employer-provided pensions, but now many workers will need to rely on their own work-related and personal savings plus Canada Pension benefits.
List all your assets. This includes big items like your home, car or boat. It also includes your savings and investments. You'll find this information in bank and investment statements, retirement savings and other pension papers, and your will. Track how much money you spend every month.

This includes basics like food, clothing, utilities, and car costs, as well as extra expenses like eating out, going out, insurance, health or dental bills, and money you donate.Look at your bills, receipts and credit card statements. Don't just estimate - add up bills and receipts for at least a month to get an accurate picture.
This is something you can do whether you're five, 10 or even 20 years away from retirement. Whether its lobster, filet mignon, or some other delicacy, make it an annual tradition to stimulate your taste buds in a way you'll never forget. Post pictures of the meal online, acknowledging your fine company and those who helped prepare it.
