The law in BC allows a child of the deceased to make a claim to vary a Will, so you cannot prevent an estranged child from making a claim. However, with prudent estate planning and good Will drafting you can make it unlikely that the estranged child will have a successful claim. The Trustee Act allows for an Executor to be paid a fee of up 5% of the realized value of the Estate.

Three and a half years after my mother died, leaving this law firm in charge of processing all her final documents, my family received the final distribution of our parents' estate.
Of primary concern is the ongoing challenge I experienced in my efforts to communicate with the firm, which often seemed reluctant to provide specific details about my parents estate and the distribution process.
And, in addition to neglecting to oversee the distribution of the physical contents of the estate (furniture, artwork, photographs, etc), this law firm attempted to relinquish their responsibility
