Excellent Dojo. Sheehan Esi Lak is an inspiring teacher and sensei, holding true to Goju Ryu style and principles . You get a solid workout and learn something new every class . It took me a long time to find another Karate Teacher after my original instructor, Hanshi Bill Hinds (RIP) moved to Magnetawan. Yamato Karate does not disappoint, and they have a great kids program as well.

I started Karate at Yamato in May of 2019 with absolutely no experience in Goju-Ryu or Karate in general. Immediately after joining Yamato, I felt welcomed by Essi and the students in the class. Essi is a phenomenal Sensei and both him and the students created a great environment for a newcomer to learn. I never felt out of place and every student has been helpful in assisting with my training. I am pleased to say I recently received my Green belt 6 ryu certification at Yamato and the amount of confidence in myself and my skills is something I am so grateful for! Sign up!!!

I have been training at Yamato Karate for over 10 years. The instruction at Yamato goes above and beyond, focusing on quality while also providing a positive learning environment. I recently earned my first degree black belt which wouldn't have been possible without the excellent training I have received from Yamato. Shihan Essi Lak and other instructors push the students to work their hardest and to develop a true passion for the sport they enjoy so much.

I have spent the last 35+ years studying a variety of Martial Arts styles and disciplines, training in Shotokan, Kobudo, Wado Ryu, grappling, Krav Maga and Tai-kwon-do as well as several years of military service. The last eight years with Yamato Karate Studio and Shihan Essi Lak have been far and above the most rewarding and beneficial years of training I have ever experienced.
