Current Role: John founded Bridgeport Asset Management in 2007. He is the chief architect of Bridgeport's investment strategy, with ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the investment process and client relations. 10 years of private equity investment experience with Toronto-based Clairvest Group (TSX: CVG), as Managing Director and senior member of the investment team.
I founded Bridgeport Asset Management after working more than 10 years as a principal of a Toronto-based private equity firm. As a Chartered Accountant with several years of experience in investment banking and business valuation, I launched Bridgeport with one simple but critically foundational idea: the firm would manage other people's wealth the exact same way that I wanted - and expected - my own capital to be managed.
At Bridgeport, we buy businesses, not stock certificates. By that we mean we conduct thorough research - and only make investment decisions if we fully understand the underlying factors that drive specific companies and their future business prospects. Unlike many of our peers, we don't rely heavily on market timing or economic trends.
Successful investing is as much about avoiding losers as it is about selecting winners. While we possess no magic formulas, we believe you maximize the probability for investment success by investing in businesses with favourable economic characteristics at attractive prices, and avoiding businesses that operate in industries with challenging dynamics and future prospects.
