Underneath your tooth's outer enamel and within the dentin is an area of soft tissue called the pulp, which carries the tooth's nerves, veins, arteries and lymph vessels. Root canals are very small, thin divisions that branch off from the top pulp chamber down to the tip of the root. A tooth has at least one but no more than four root canals.
Oral surgery is a broad field that addresses the different problems that can occur within the mouth. Most are related to the teeth, though some problems may involve the jaw or the gums. Aligning the teeth correctly allows for proper cleaning, reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Aligning the teeth and jaws in a proper bite allows for an efficient chew which may reduce wear and tear on the teeth and jaw joints, reducing the risk of chewing difficulties, jaw pain, tooth wear and gum problems.
Gum disease (periodontitis) is a problem for over 60% of the adult population. Because it often goes unnoticed until the later stages, it has often been called a "silent epidemic" in North American culture. Some of the signs and symptoms of gum disease are red, swollen gum tissue, bleeding of the gums when you brush or floss, chronic bad breath, and loose teeth.
