The cupping procedure commonly involves creating a small area of low air pressure next to the skin. The cups themselves can be various shapes including balls or bells, and may range in size from 1 to 3 inches (25mm - 75mm) across the opening. Plastic and glass are the most common materials used today, replacing the horn, pottery, bronze and bamboo cups used in earlier times.
Meridians run like energy currents throughout the body. When blockage in one part of a meridian occurs, it impedes the flow in others. Acupuncture removes the blockage and revives the usual flow though the meridians, restoring Qi and helping the body's internal organs with imbalances.

Acupuncture's scientific rationale is that inserting needles at acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system, releasing chemicals which either alleviate pain or affect the body's internal regulating system.Because disposable needles are sterilised and packed individually, there is no risk of infection.
