Sutherland-Chan School of Massage Therapy is a career college with longevity in the massage therapy profession and a solid reputation as one of the best schools in North America. We view massage therapy as a health care profession (as opposed to an aesthetics or service occupation) with historic roots and a modern foundation in evidence and effectiveness.
We are proud to see that our graduates are preferentially hired by employers and that there is a notable prominence of leaders and educators in our profession who are Sutherland-Chan alumni. The two founders, Grace Chan and Christine Sutherland, met at a now defunct massage school where Grace was a student and Christine was one of her instructors.

Services
One of the distinctive features of Sutherland-Chan's massage therapy program is our teaching clinic system. Clinical education is the integrating piece that brings together what students learn in the classroom. It also provides diversity of experience in the clients and conditions they encounter while in school.
We are a warm, energetic, engaged community of people who appreciate and support each other. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. Our faculty are experts with wide-ranging clinical practices and an average of more than 10 years teaching experience - 98% are Sutherland-Chan graduates.
Still to this day, most people have very little idea how much hard work and talent is involved in becoming a massage therapist. Problems in any of these areas may prevent an individual from becoming registered as a massage therapist or maintaining a successful practice.
The type of person who chooses to become a massage therapist is someone who combines an interest in people and health, a commitment to community service and people-centred alternatives, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Many of Sutherland-Chan's students are making career changes, having found that they prefer to have more control over their work and more opportunities to help affect meaningful change in people's lives.

One of the best ways to "check us out" is to come to the school, meet our admissions team, and ask any questions you may have. We invite you to attend one of our Information Sessions or Open Houses to learn about our school's program and about becoming a massage therapist. You will encounter others who, like yourself, are considering pursuing their massage therapy education at Sutherland-Chan.
Over 20 years, we saw good success and published a variety of popular and important titles, such as An Introduction to Heat and Cold as Therapy and The Emergence of the Massage Therapy Profession in North America: A History in Archetypes. However, there have been many changes in both massage therapy education and the publishing industry, with a rapid decline in the past few years in demand from schools for textbooks.

This is not a trans-friendly place to get a massage.
My birth name was insisted upon me by the front desk staff and I was asked loudly in front of the waiting room why I didn't like (feminine birth name) as it's "such a pretty name". I have never had such an unprofessional and insensitive reaction to disclosing my birth name (needed for insurance paperwork). I was misgendered throughout the massage and felt incredibly uncomfortable.
I was also distressed that I had requested a female student but the male instructor still came in.
Beyond the trans-specific issues, it was mediocre

They put an ad with some sort of glue/adhesive on my windshield. It's left a big mark on my car. They did this to every car on my street (dozens) and likely on many more streets.
