Crane operator certification in BC & Yukon is mandatory for boom trucks, mobile or tower cranes with a lifting capacity over 5 tons or a reach over 25 feet. There are 11 different crane operator certification categories depending on the type and lifting capacity of the crane you are operating. The capacity of a crane for the purposes of the certification categories is determined by the highest lift capacity found on the crane's load chart.

WorkSafe BC has a Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] with Transport Canada for areas of shared jurisdiction, including crane operation on ships. Under WorkSafe BC Guideline 14.34 any operator of a hoisting device (including marine pedestal mounted cranes) are required to be trained and assessed as competent.
