Depression can be debilitating and interfere with all aspects of life. However, there is hope, even when life feels hopeless. Gaining a better understanding of our emotions and listening to the needs that underlie them can give clues to how to resolve and move past hopelessness.
By changing what we say to ourselves as well as some of the behaviours that perpetuate depression, we can reverse the downward spiral and regain purpose and meaning in our lives.Doing this alone is extremely difficult. We can get stuck in the same old negative thoughts and behaviours, because we can not see them objectively.

Debilitating anxiety is a malfunction of the body's natural fear response, also known as the flight-freeze survival response. This system is our body's alarm system and when it is working well, it warns us of danger and helps us stay safe. Anxiety is the anticipation of bad things happening, which can be useful in assessing risks and alerting us of potential pitfalls.
Sometimes we continue to do something despite the negative consequences. It can be a maladaptive attempt to cope with our situation or our emotions. We often use unhealthy behaviours to escape, numb or otherwise manage what feels unmanageable. Unfortunately, the positive effects are short-lived and the negative consequences can be serious or even life-threatening.
