By definition, a tribute act, tribute band or tribute group is a music group, singer, or musician who plays and mimics the music of specific well-known entertainers. Many tribute bands pay homage to performers that have long stopped touring and to some that have passed. Tribute concerts are a beautiful way to remember the music, but also allows new generations to experience a time that otherwise may have been forgotten.
The early 70s brought in a genre of music known as Country Rock and groups like the Eagles were the forerunners of this genre. From England the music of Elton John and Rod Stewart were a mainstay and in America we had another new style of music known as easy listening with artists like James Taylor, Neil Young, Cat Stevens and Jim Croce.
When it comes to the music of the 1980s there is no doubt that the three biggest pop stars of that era were Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. There was also another British Invasion with groups like the Police, and Elvis Costello and many more. In 1983 MTV made stars out of groups like Culture Club, The Romantics, the Pretenders, Human League, and the Thompson Twins.
The term "Dance Music" became a genre. Quite simply it was just that, and groups like Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch came crashing in on the scene followed by The Spice Girls, Britney Spears, and smash hits like Barbie Girl by AQUA and What Is Love by HADDAWAY were iconic songs of the period.
Rap and Hip Hop seemed to merge with R&B and groups like BLACK STREET led the pack with their smash single No Diggity, not to mention House of Pain with their huge dance floor classic Jump Around.MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Dee-Lite also all had monster hits of their own.
