Julien, a Master Baker in artisan breads and pastries, came to Halifax from France on a six-month contract in 1984 and never left. Didier Julien and his wife Laura Mulrooney opened the first location of Julien's Patisserie, Bakery & Cafe in Chester. Expansion began in 1992 when Julien's started selling at the Halifax Brewery Market, and shortly thereafter the Halifax location in the Hydrostone Market was opened.

Julien's menu includes artisan breads and traditional French pastries, from a sourdough made using local beer to caneles, a pastry that originated in Bordeaux and quickly became a favourite among their customers. Julien's has stayed away from gluten-free products, but Didier has developed his own kamut and spelt recipes.

This place has really nice, cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff and amazing treats. Everything is great. There's sweet and savory items. Great coffee and you can buy bread to take home as well.

Quiet (especially Sunday Mornings), nice and friendly place, I love to come here especially during weekends. Coffee is very good (I'm originally Italian so I can tell 😉), it doesn't taste like it's burned, pastries are excellent and people very nice and friendly.

I loved this little bakery, big variety of bakery items and sandwiches. Nice coffee and tea options. Quaint inside and a nice small patio outside. The staff was very polite and friendly.

We normally buy 4 x 9-grain breads every 2-3 weeks. However your recent price increase from $5 to $6 a loaf will mean we look elsewhere. Please consider coming back to an acceptable price. We love your bread!

Really cute spot! Although I usually really enjoy this place I left feeling annoyed this morning. I was enjoying a nice morning on the garden patio in the sun when someone put the awning down getting rid of the nice warm sun on a cooler morning. I asked the girl to put it back up bc it was much nicer with the sun, she then said her boss put it down and left and she didn’t know how to use it. There were multiple people working and not one person knows how to use it? Why would the boss put it down in the first place? No one was complaining about the sun because I was one of two people on the patio

We went to Julien's and we loved it! They have lots of desserts. It is difficult to choose which one you will take home. We bought the White Sourdough bread and an apple pie. The bread is very soft and the crunch crust is delicious! The apple pie has plenty of tasting, the apples are very caramelized, and crunch crust! Wow! Sorry, we didn't have enough time to take the pictures for the apple pie... we ate too fast... 🤤😋🤤😋🤤😋
It was a delightful experience. I really recommend them.

This was my very first visit to Julien's. There was sanitizer at the entrance, proper spacing between tables. The pastries all looked amazing. I went for the almond tart. It was fantastic. The cafe was very clean and the staff were so friendly

Wonderful place - delicious pastry - warm atmosphere! I usually don't write reviews, but I am a regular customer here, so couldn't miss a chance to leave my review. Atmosphere is absolutely filled with warmness and cheerfulness - wonderful for bold morning coffee as well as cup of tea during the rainy day. Although the service might not be the most personalized, however only because it is partially patisserie shop and cafe, I am truly fascinated with the speed and accuracy of the staff taking great care of such high flow of customers. Not to forget their variety of pastry and bread products - you

Great coffee, huge cafe au lait, tasty croissants, and unique cinnamon buns.
The croissant sandwich was tasty but a little expensive at $6.95.
The cinnamon bun dough felt similar to the croissant which I found very interesting.
Friendly staff, and a very cozy, warm cafe.
