Very suddenly so much shifted for us culturally. For more than a year most of us have encountered uncertainty, discomfort, strong emotion. There have been different day-to-day challenges and tensions: in some households, people sharing space to work from home and attend school, and for people who live alone, the isolation of so much time alone, less or no in-person contact with friends and family.

Many of us have felt the precariousness of our employment or become unemployed, or moved to reduced hours and reduced pay.

Jeremy Tomlinson (he/him) provides counselling to individuals and couples in a safe, supportive environment. Clients are encouraged to make change and find solutions at a pace that feels comfortable to them. Jeremy also provides consultation to other therapists about their work, including EMDR therapists working towards Certification or Approved Consultant with EMDRIA.
Having a healthy and fulfilling sex life is important. When couples (or individuals) experience sexual difficulties it is sometimes challenging to know who to talk to or how to deal with the situation. Desire discrepancy (when the two members of the couple have different levels of desire for sex). Understanding from your therapist that sexuality may be a difficult subject for you to discuss.
EMDR Therapy is an approach to therapy that is particularly helpful for people who have experienced some sort of traumatic experience. These experiences include the things that we normally think of as traumatic like childhood abuse, earthquakes, bank robberies, sexual assaults and so on, and also the things that may be personally traumatizing like humiliations, major disappointments, betrayals, bereavement and so on.
The short answer to both of these questions is, no. You should not expect to begin processing your troubling memories in your first meeting with an EMDR therapist. Each person will need a different number of sessions to prepare to process troubling memories. People with one troubling memory, or just a few of them, will be able to begin to process these memories after just a few sessions.
