Our mission is to facilitate meaningful change and provide a bridge to healthier possibilities through innovative, community driven and supportive programming. Watari was created in 1986 as a response to the lack of services and programs available for high-risk street involved youth in Vancouver. Since then, Watari has helped thousands of people in the Downtown Eastside and the surrounding communities.
Consistently advocating for vulnerable people, Watari has had a large and lasting positive impact on the community. We rely on the help and support of our community to make a difference in the lives of the people we encounter in our work. Donations, grants and in-kind gifts are greatly appreciated and a tax receipt will be available for gifts over $20.00.

Services
Our mission is to facilitate meaningful change and provide a bridge to healthier possibilities through innovative, community driven and supportive programming. Watari's service is trauma-informed and based on an individual's innate strengths, capabilities, and desire for wellness. We encourage an exploration and deeper understanding of self and community, so that people can make informed choices.
Sunny was on the Board of Directors at Watari in 2018, and returned to the position in 2021. During his sabbatical from Watari, he attended law school, which equipped him with skills and knowledge that he now contributes to Watari. His professional experience includes working at UBC as a student advisor for several years.
Watari's Community Addictions Counselling Team (CACT) works with individuals, couples, and families in the Strathcona/ Downtown Eastside area and surrounding communities around issues related to problem substance misuse. We provide free confidential counselling, education, referrals, and other preventative programs.
The Vancouver Intensive Supervision Unit provides for the effective administration of court orders and assertive case management for adults with mental health issues serving sentences within an integrated framework comprised of: Corrections Branch, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, and our Watari employee.
Many of the participants of the MHP have had interactions with housing, income assistance, mental health teams, and addiction service providers, yet continue to struggle with these and other issues.
The primary purpose of the Watari System Negotiator and their team is to appropriately assess, treat and assist individuals presenting in court, and have their charges stayed, once they have been sufficiently helped and/or transitioned to a more long-term care team. These individuals would often be better and more effectively served in the health and social service realm, rather than the criminal justice stream.

I have never been here but I do know some who have and ive been told they are a great resource for those looking to better themselves or for general help in an increasingly difficult to deal with World.
I would point out that part of their own overview states they "Embrace diversity..." but looking at their employee photos it appears of the 16 posted only 4 are men and 3 of those 4 are white. But hey, if they get results I don't care, I just found it funny and almost ironic...almost.
