Dr. Barb Deter obtained her degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1991. Since then, Barb has cared for companion animals in Guelph and the surrounding area. She is known for her balanced, compassionate approach to small animal health care, her skill as a surgeon and her interest in incorporating effective complementary practices.
Southgate Animal Hospital backs onto Preservation Park giving the clinic a rural feel at the edge of beautiful Guelph. Inside the clinic, our floors are made of a non-porous and shock absorbing surface that gives pets secure footing and comfort. Ample windows provide plenty of natural light to our work areas and dog housing area.
Leptospirosis is a life-threatening disease caused by bacteria that are shed in the urine of infected wildlife, especially skunks and raccoons. Our pets can be exposed to this disease through any contact with an opening in their skin or a mucous membrane such as their eyes, mouth or nose. Leptospira can survive for long periods of time in moist environments such as puddles, streams and wet or dewy grass that is frequented by infected wildlife.
Our clinic is equipped with a full dentistry suite including an ultrasonic scaler, dental surgical instruments and a digital dental x-ray machine. A mouth with healthy teeth and gums should have very little odour--maybe just a trace of a recent meal or favourite chew toy. It's not just about bad breath.
What is a Heartworm Test? A heartworm test uses a small sample of a dog's blood to screen for the presence of heartworm infection. It is important to note that it is only able to detect the presence of heartworms that were introduced more than 6 months prior to testing. That means the tests that we perform this season are to ensure that your dog was not infected LAST season.

We are extremely pleased & satisfied with the professionalism, kindness & conscientious approach Southgate applies to the care they provide their animal patients.
We originally placed the care of our Calico cat in the hands of the Staff at Southgate based upon a referral we received through close friends. The kindness, empathy and thoughtfulness the Staff here showed us upon our "Sadie's" passing has remained with us to this day.
We are now entrusting the care of our "Abby", a 6-month old "Cotton-Poo", with Southgate and feel completely comfortable with our decision.

Dr. Shanna Clitch & the whole team at Southgate are incredibly knowledgeable, professional and so very kind. We always trusted that bringing our fur family to Southgate would result in the absolute best care. Dr. Clitch was incredible with our great dane right through until his passing, and we would recommend her to any giant breed owners. Not only has the most competent staff, but is also very affordable

I cannot say enough amazing things about all the Doctors and staff at Southgate Animal Hospital. This is by far the best vet practice in Guelph. My dog had some pretty complicated health issues last year and our vet at Southgate was extremely caring, knowledgable and never gave up on us. We continue to get amazing service every time we visit, all the staff are professional, organized and it's clear they all care immensely about what they do. They view your animal as a patient, not a dollar sign. They will never try and up-sell anything and what you do pay is very reasonable.They take a very personalized

Wonderful people are working there! Dr Shanna is doing a fantastic job and it is always a pleasure to have her around. Mary, our dog, is getting everything she needs and that for a very reasonable price. So, it is for us totally worth it to travel from Mississauga to Guelph.

I have been taking my dog to Barb for years and now I am taking my new puppy. She has always been so knowledgeable and supportive with big and small decisions. I recently had a minor emergency with my puppy ingesting something he shouldn’t and they fit me in right away! Always a pleasure and I look forward to many years to come.
