During a complete eye exam, called a dilated eye exam, the doctor widens the pupil of the eye with eye drops to allow a closer look at the inside of the eye. Straight lines, such as telephone poles, the sides of buildings or streetlight poles, look wavy. AMD affects part of the black of the eye called the Macula, the central part of the retina.
Normally the lens is clear, it focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye which sends images to the brain.
