I started at OpenMat about a month ago. I was worried about learning BJJ because there are typically mostly guys in the classes. I was warmly welcomed by everyone at OpenMat and each class the Class Assistant (Amber-- she is amazing) works very 1:1 with the girls in the class. I have learned a lot so far and will keep coming back 😊

They claim to offer personal trainers with flexibility to train around your schedule and offer different belt levels to meet various types of budgets, but when I tried to book a trainer no one was every available. I had an intro lesson with Prince, but he was too busy to take on any new clients, so I began meeting with James, who had a very inconsistent schedule, one week he would be free three times a week, then the next week only twice, then one week not at all, he also cancelled a bunch of times last minute or just wouldn't show up, then he said he wasn't available to continue training at all

This is a great gym, clean, friendly, no BS egos or TMA cult-like mentalities. There is team unity without things being too tribal. It is one of the few places that still teaches a good amount of self defence and not just sport jiu jitsu. Self defence BJJ mentally prepares you for a fight in terms of knowing what to do, and sport BJJ emotionally prepares you for the pressure and adrenaline. You’ll get both here. It has kids classes alongside adult classes twice a week for the parents, so that was a HUGE plus for me and my son.
The one thing total beginners should know is that it is quite technical

For a wide variety of reasons, I am very, very picky when it comes to picking BJJ gyms. My original instructor was big on jiu jitsu being for everybody so I keep that in mind when I go to other gyms. Open Mat proves that you can have high level grappling without the meathead aspect that many gyms have. Elliot is a very welcoming guy and has a highly detailed teaching style. He often talks about the logical reasoning behind why he is doing what he is doing which is great for beginners who may not understand a lot of the rationale for many BJJ movements. I haven't tried to Muay Thai classes yet so

I have never been to a better BJJ school!!! In the past 8 years I have been participating (on and off) in BJJ and during that time I have had the opportunity to attend 5 different schools and OpenMat is by far the best one. My BJJ journey started in Europe where I attended a facility with a single instructor who only taught a heavy-weight game to a bunch of "meat heads" who loved the fact that there was a new light-weight (150lbs), white belt they could practice on. Although I developed an excellent closed guard and I know how to defend myself against much larger players, I was constantly nervous

Facility: It's a small basement, it can lack fresh air but not too bad. Changing rooms are very basic and small too. the facility seems to be relatively clean for a grappling gym, no complaints there. There is a weights area, I wish it was used as some sort of stretching/lounge area. There are gyms everywhere in Toronto, I would get rid of it. 3/5
People: The students/staff/instructors are very friendly and nice people, anybody would feel welcome here. 5/5
Schedule: Really good schedule but it could have been better if there were more weekend classes, especially if you're under 30. 4/5
