Aikido Tendokai is a Japanese martial arts dojo downtown Toronto ideal for kids and adults of all ages. Aikido Tendokai was established in 1992 and is a member of the Ontario Aikido Federation (OAF), the Canadian Aikido Federation (CAF) and is affiliated with Hombu (Aikikai). Our chief instructor is Yumi Nakamura Sensei, ranked Shihan Rokudan (sixth-degree black belt).
She trained in Japan, and has practiced for more than 40 years. Other Tendokai instructors include Rob Carroll Sensei - Shidoin Rokudan (sixth-degree black belt). If you would like to attend an adult class view our stage 3 opening guideline before visiting the dojo. During classes available to beginners, warm-ups generally include exercises in falling and basic footwork and, beginners' receive special attention. The rest of the class is usually devoted to the practice of aikido self defense techniques and forms ("katas") that the instructor demonstrates.
Aikido Tendokai weapons program include qualified instruction of safe weapons classes. The study of weapons use is to enhance our students empty hand techniques as well as to encourage a more well rounded and experienced martial artist. Weapons training in Aikido is important in that it helps us learn principles of timing, combative distance, sensitivity and awareness.
