B C Coast Pilots
BC Pilots have been in the business of keeping 15,000 miles of the province's waters safe since the mid-1800's and have an exceptional safety record and provide independent service to every company across the shipping industry. From Alaska to the southern Canadian border, under the Pilotage Act, we are mandated to board and guide any foreign ship coming in or out of BC's ports for safety, efficiency and environmental protection.

When we are not piloting ships, the BC Coast Pilots also review changes to shipping routes, make recommendations for the protection of marine habitat and evaluate the impacts of proposed new projects.
Services
Although the Captain of the ship is very familiar with their own vessel and crew, they may not necessarily be familiar with the specifics of each port where their vessel must go. BC Coast Pilots live, work and play along the BC coast, and have a lifetime of experience in how tides, geography and weather patterns affect the way ships move in and out of BC's harbours.
There are four different Pilotage Authorities in Canada who work hard to protect every inch of the country's coast and inland waters. Together, the Atlantic, St. Lawrence, Great Lakes and Pacific Pilotage Authority are served by over 400 working marine pilots across Canada. Each waterway is unique, and each Authority relies on local knowledge to provide smooth pilotage service for its responsible area.
Captain Steve Kennedy is our new President! Born and raised on the west coast, as a young boy, he lived in the Queen Charlotte Islands before relocating to Victoria BC. His father worked as a commercial fisher and logger, which gave Steve an early desire to work on the water. Captain Kennedy's first job as a teen was working on a commercial fishing boat.
We consulted on the mitigation plan for heavier tankers in the Second Narrows. The discussions led to the development of a new navigation technology, independent of the ships' existing equipment, called the Portable Pilot Units (PPUs). The units, created in collaboration with the Pacific Pilotage Authority, are tailored for the unique pilotage conditions on the BC coast.
BC Pilots have been in the business of keeping BC's waters safe since the mid-1800s. As industry expands, pilots must grow as well. We are constantly looking for the next generation of pilots and are happy to speak with those who wish to learn more about how to get on this exciting and rewarding career path.
