Uprising Breads Bakery
Uprising Breads Bakery has been baking its great tasting, multigrain breads and honey-sweetened goodies for over 30 years now. We did our growing up in the 1980s and '90s as people were becoming more and more aware of the benefits of healthy food choices. Bread, in particular, was experiencing something of a renaissance.

The demand for 'breads of substance' made with all natural ingredients was on the rise. At Uprising Breads we never have, and never will, use preservatives or artificial anything in our baking. And we always have, and always will, sweeten with honey, molasses or nothing at all. We look for every opportunity to offer healthy choices without compromising those small indulgences that a terrific bakery can offer.
Services
Uprising Breads Bakery has been in continuous business at our location just off Commercial Drive on Venables for coming on 40 years now. Over the years we have also been proud sponsor of our good neighbour, The Kettle Friendship Society, both financially and and with in kind donations.

The work they do is admirable; providing a welcoming environment and assistance to clients facing mental health challenges and overcoming barriers to housing and employment.Being in the bakery business we are able to support many worthy local causes through our various product donation programs. Applicants for our daily Donation at Close program can apply through our website.
We all know that one of the easiest ways to reduce our impact on the planet is through the three-R's: Reduce, Re-use & Recycle. With the help of Climate Smart we measure our carbon footprint, offset our greenhouse gas emissions and put in place practices to reduce our emissions.

When deciding to replace old equipment, we always consider the energy consumption/efficiency of our new equipment options and chose those with the lowest impact on our planet's atmosphere.Next time you drop by our bakery cafe, ask us about our Free Grounds For Your Garden. Coffee grounds make great fertilizer and are a valuable component in the compost pile.
Uprising Breads Bakery has a daily program in place to respond to the many requests we receive for product donations. We refer to this program as "Donation at Close". We are particularly interested in providing assistance to groups involved with local poverty issues and make standing bulk donations to The Quest Society and The Vancouver Food Bank.
Then there's lunch. Our soups are made on site using our own stocks and fresh local produce when available. We make 3 different wraps and a variety of cold-cut and vegetarian sandwiches on our own breads; everything is ready to go - or sit down and stay awhile. There are salads as well as hot items like samosas and Jamaican patties.
Below you will find a list of our breads. Uprising Breads has been baking nutritious and tasty breads in East Vancouver for over 30 years. We never have (and never will) use preservatives or artificial anything. We always have (and always will) lightly sweeten with honey, molasses or nothing at all.

Good selection of organic home made soups, fresly baked bread and muffins. Their rye bread is one of the best around. Great local spot in town.

I finally found my favourite local bread. It's the delicious buttermilk honey bread. It's perfect for French toast, but also great for a good panini. They also serve things other than amazing bread options, such as sandwiches and pastries. I had a london fog and it might be the best one ever. The london fog from other cafes tend to be super sweet, but this one is perfect. And finally, wonderful customer service. Super helpful and kind. Can't wait to come back.

I had an oat milk cappuccino, it was a little weak!
The sourdough round loaf I got here was just okay. Not as sour as I'd have liked.
I will go back to try some of the baked treats when I'm in the area.
There is no indoor seating now

This place is so cool and smells delicious. Tried the apple danish with green tea and it was a perfect match. We got some muffins and banana bread to go, both absolutely delicious. Great service and great products.

I usually get their granola, cookies or muffins, but they do serve wraps, pies and sliced cakes as well as frozen ready to heat foods. I tried their chicken pie and it was delicious. It's tucked away from the main part of Commercial Drive but defiantly check this place out if you have a sweet tooth.

Got the Irish Soda Bread. Wanted a snack-everything looked good but in this holiday season I thought why not fruitcake. It was delicious and I could taste and see all the ingredients. They used whole nuts which I appreciated over chopped which sometimes disappears in all the flavours. I could taste both almonds and hazelnuts. We also got a pumpkin and cranberry muffin. I think they used whole cranberries instead of dried which gave a nice pop and sourness.
The Soda bread isn't sliced like the other breads they have (I forgot to ask if they would slice it), but it was easy to do at home. I could

I was in the neighborhood around lunch break so decided to stop in here for a scone. Scone was alright but felt I made better ones at home Service is meh. I would recommend some of the other bakeries along the Drive instead.

I use to love Uprising, their Ginger Snaps 15 years ago were the best, it had a bit of a kick from the fresh ginger, a bit crispy & chewy but the recipe has changed over the years. It was still an okay cookie a few years ago but now it's just not worth it anymore. The cookies are now flat as a pancake, lacks the complexity it once had before and is a bit airy. A shame since I would like to keep supporting a long standing local business. I'll give the cookies another shot in a year or two if you're still around, I hope you guys go back to the OG recipe!

My second time here, specifically for the double-baked almond croissant. The crunchy top is covered with almond flakes and icing sugar - overall not too sweet, just the way I like it. Inside is soft and flaky. Too bad they skimped on the almond paste. Otherwise, I would give it 5 stars.

To all of the reviews stating that there is bad customer service, maybe take a look at your own behaviour before slandering the staff at this bakery. I've had tremendous experiences with multiple employees. Just because the staff is all fairly young doesn't mean you don't initiate the respect. I'm horrified at the interaction between the person in front of me and the cashier. He was yelling at the cashier for some small inconvenience and you would've thought their ages were swapped. Regardless of what I witnessed, I was met with kind eyes, some small chit chat and the sandwich

Meh. Just bought what should be a fresh loaf of bread as it's a bakery after all. Nope its 3 day old 'fresh' bread. Stale. Waste of my money and time. Save your money and buy bread somewhere else.

Let's get to the main problem with this local bakery. The people both staff and patrons are pretentious self centred alt/emo/liberal hipsters. I ordered a coffee and a raspberry rhubarb pastry which was ok but would have been better if heated up. The girl who served me could care less about helping me out and just wanted to go on her break. She serves me a cold slice of the rhubarb pastry without heating it up and then she tries to short change me for $7. Her other coworkers seem to have the same "me" attitude and be in their own little world. The patrons aren't any better with

One of a number of casual eatries that's located near The Drive, Uprisings Bakeries offers a decent selection of pastries and other sweets, as well as various sandwiches, salads and soups for breakfast/lunch options. For my visit, I had their Raspberry Rhubarb Slice and Blueberry Cinnamon Bun (details below). Both were tasty, and the prices were very reasonable. While not outstanding, I think that this is still a solid bakery, and is definitely worth checking out if you're near the area.

I love their blueberry cinnamon roll. They are generous with the icing. My friend loves the rhubarb square, again, the size is big. The walnut danish is a must try, too. I always bought them home and reheat the pastries in an oven, an excellent treats for afternoon tea time.

There is so much about this place that I love including their wonderful salads, samosas, breads and neighbourhood vibe. Weirdly though, I find that some of their cookies fall short of my expectations and their pie crust is just awful - doughy not flakey. For a bakery, I'd have thought pie crust would be easily nailed.

Still, big props to them for being a great little neighbourhood lunch place. Keep up the great work but consider reworking your pie crust recipe.

Love this place! It's my go to for lunch when I'm working. Its just down the street! Fresh everything!
My only complaint is that the staff can be extremely rude and off putting, it's a total "better than you" attitude EVERYTIME I go there. Like all the customers are an annoyance or dumb.... everytime! Besides the staff, I love this place and it's definitely the food that keeps me coming back.

I was buying tires for my mom's car and I had nothing to do so I walked over to Uprising Bakery for a coffee and a muffin. I have been to Uprising before but that was many years ago. I'm usually not around this area but since I was I dropped in.

The shop is still as I remember it. Bustling busy and lots of freshly baked goodies to temp the palette! I didn't want to eat too much so I settled on a coffee and their egg nog white chocolate muffin.

I know this bakery is health conscious so they don't use a lot of oil and preservatives. Normally, I would say the muffin was

Baked goods would get at least 4 starts from me, but their savoury food items are so bland. I had Mexi Veggie wrap (kudos for vegeterian food), veggie chilli and happy planet happy smoothie which was the best part of the meal.

The wrap was reheated in the microwave (dear lord, why???!!) and the chilli was room temperature with a cold pocket (here's a tip if you insist on using a microwave, heat the soup for few minutes, stir it and then blast it for another minute or so).

Service was so indifferent I actually regretting tipping them. Next time I will stick to cherry scones.

The baked goods are so good. I love the different breads they make there.
I don't think the service is that great, I find most staff or the same staff members every time I go there to be quite rude and "too good" or something.
I thought it was kind of expensive and not really worth it to eat there, depending on what you got. I mean its a really nice bakery, the atmosphere isn't super friendly, the goods are good, but you could probably find something just as good somewhere else with a nicer atmosphere.

I like to support businesses that not only provide quality products, reflected in the price, but also good, friendly service. I experienced very rude service that makes me not want to spend my money there. I wanted to like the baked goods, but the assorted muffins and bread I purchased were dry and had very little taste. Perhaps they were stale.

Anyway I wont be coming back here. I wanted to love this place but the service and quality of baked goods is really not worth coming back.

Every city has some bakery somewhere that began as a cooperatively owned anti-capitalistic protest group that just happened to bake its own bread. Most of them, like Uprising, have since then sold their shares to a majority share holder, and quite rightly begun earning a small profit making coffee, scones and 4 different kinds of Croissants for the neighborhood parents.

Many people frequent the bakery because of its long history in the neighborhood, and the fact that it has always been locally owned. This is also demonstrated by the playful and borderline hippy décor, with cartoonish paintings
