The difference between these two types of professionals is in the tools we use to treat our patients. A doctor of naturopathic medicine uses diet and lifestyle, clinical nutrition, plant based (botanical) medicine, as well as acupuncture and homeopathy, to not only treat our patients but also prevent future disease and imbalance before it happens.

Services
Botanical or herbal medicine is a medical system based on the use of plants and plant extracts, taken internally or used topically, as treatment. Naturopathic doctors have extensive training in the use of botanical medicine. Perhaps more importantly, naturopathic doctors are also well trained in recognizing and avoiding drug/herb interactions, something I like to remind the public about when they choose to self-administer/prescribe herbs.
Clinical nutrition is the study of the relationship between food and a healthy body. The importance of diet and nutrition on disease prevention and treatment cannot be underestimated! You can expect your appointments with me to involve a lot of talk about what you are currently eating and how we can best optimize diet to address your health goals.
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) involving the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points (called acupuncture points) in the body. According to TCM, energy (or qi) flows through channels (called meridians) throughout the body. When the body is healthy, this qi flows freely and effectively.
Lifestyle counseling is a way of identifying and addressing the impact that our activities of daily life, stress levels, emotions and life events can have on our overall health. Journaling, talk therapy, meditation, positive self-talk and self-perception may be necessary talking points. Making yourself a priority in your day is a skill that often needs to be taught and then practiced over and over again.
I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND), registered with TC-CONO. I completed my undergraduate degree at Acadia University with honours in Psychology. In 2010, I graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto, ON., one of the six schools in North America eligible to grant the designation of Naturopathic Doctor.
