These Portuguese doughnuts are irresistible! The crme ptissire is made with a generous amount of egg yolks resulting in a rich and luscious filling. Established in 1960 and in the heart of Ottawa our family owned and operated bakery is founded on quality food and service. At the Portuguese Bakery we are passionate about serving freshly baked bread on a daily basis.
Our baked goods range from hand-crafted corn bread to specialty rye bread. Pastries vary from Portuguese pastel de nata, a fan favourite, to simple almond croissants and butter tarts.

A warning to the Portuguese in Ottawa. The positive reviews of the "egg tarts" are coming from mangia cakes. The natas are frozen, rubbery, and overly sweet to compensate. If you're a pork chop looking for the classic flakey custard delight, you're going to be greatly disappointed. The staff are nice and I'm sure the falafels are great but I don't think there is anything Portuguese about "Portuguese Bakery."

Disappointed -- I came Saturday afternoon, and asked if the egg tarts were freshly baked from today, and it was an emphatic YES! But when I tasted them leaving the store, the curst was not crispy, was soft, and clearly not from today. They were still ok, but don't try to pass off a day old pastry for a fresh baked one. Just tell me it's day old. At least then I would have come back for a fresh one, and probably written a much better review.
I didn't taste the bread so I can't comment on that.

Now also known as SYRIAN KITCHEN (says on their new business cards).
Based on what I have overheard and read, this place is now owned and operated by Syrian families, employing some recent refugees. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner.
This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they

There are fancy bakeries, sub par bakeries, adorable bakeries, and homey bakeries that remind you of your grandmothers kitchen. This bakery falls into the latter category.
Entering the little bakery off of quiet nelson street, I am transported across the country into my grandmothers kitchen on an early Sunday morning. The smell of fresh bread wafts over me as the bell announces to the owner that another customer has wandered in. She's a cheerful woman with a bright smile, and is happy to tell you about the many different types of baked goods offered.
I bought a raisin bread loaf for $4
