During this visit, Greg asked Endo Shihan, and was given permission, to open a new Aikido martial arts dojo in Canada. Once back in Toronto, Greg, along with Ramin Arvin and other members of the local Aikido community, officially launched Naka Ima Aikikai. The Aikido dojo's first location in Etobicoke opened in 2004, offering beginner and advanced martial art classes to both adults and children starting from 5 years old.
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art, developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). The fundamental principle behind this extremely effective method of self defence is the harmonizing of energy. By blending with the opponent's attack, the force can be safely redirected, resulting in a throw or pin. On a deeper level, Aikido provides insights into the inter-connectedness of all things through the study of Ki (life force).
Aikido is a Japanese martial arts that is about connecting through motion. With its emphasis on spherical or circular motion, Aikido allows the martial arts practitioner to effectively blend with an attack resulting in a non-confrontational connection between partners.
Aikido is always practiced with a partner, and training involves studying basic Aikido movements and postures in order to better understand the dynamic relationship between yourself and your partner. The immediate benefits include stress relief and an increase in flexibility, stamina and strength.

At Naka Ima, our goal when practicing Aikido is in connecting through motion. Even during the continuous motion that happens as part of our Aikido practice, we try to focus on connecting with our own center, as well as connecting with our partner's center. By making this connection, we become fully present in the moment.
I was looking for a place to practice martial art. I didn't have a specific style in mind, I was just looking for the right spirit and teachers. I checked many places but everything felt very commercial or not right for me. I searched for a year and fell eventually on the Nakaima website and knew right-away this was the place.

I have 26 years of martial arts experience, in a number of disciplines. I recently concluded a 3-month introductory membership at Naka Ima Aikido and found the instruction to be of the highest quality. The facility in Liberty Village is cozy, and most of the space is given over to the training floor. Those looking for extensive gym and fitness equipment will not find it here... those looking for excellent instruction in Aikido will, however, find that. I was also impressed by the calibre of visiting instructors in regular seminars.
