For over 30 years, successive Ontario governments have ignored Optometrists. In 1989 the fee paid for an OHIP insured eye exam was $39.15; today, over 32 years later, it is on average $44.65. This has not kept up with inflation and does not come close to covering the cost (including rent, staff, utilities, equipment, taxes and supplies) to provide an eye exam.
It is well known that our vision changes as we grow older. Certain eye conditions, like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, can develop without initial symptoms, sometimes leading to permanent vision loss.

After being a patient of this practice for over 25 years, I was affected by the optometrists' job action, as I am a senior. (Although I am in favour of the government ensuring pay equity for Canadian optometrists, I believe the job action was an unprofessional choice which only impacted patients and had no impact on government.).
Covid also had prevented me from seeking an appointment prior to vaccines coming available. Because of these delays, I was overdue for an eye exam and my glasses were becoming scratched and coatings flaking off. I could not even get a replacement pair because

I did see DR Thomas-Parel for a emergency
and let me tell you she was amassing !!!!
She was able to see me ride a way and she did see me on a follow up appointment on a long weekend and made sure i have her emergency contact if something changed over the next few days ,
best optometrist care i ever had !

Warning parents, this is not a good place to bring young children for eye exams.
I brought my five year old kid to see Dr. Shen, who looked like a nice lady but with very limited experience and patience handling young children. Dr. Shen kept blaming my child for non-cooperative behaviour which made her unable to do her job. She even said, child above 3 should be able to cooperate. Well, my child is a normal kid, who goes to a normal school with no behaviour concerns from teachers. Clearly, Dr. Shen could not handle young children and used a 5 year old's non-cooperation as an excuse for her incompetence
