At Vision Acupuncture, we offer a specialized program to treat Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Glaucoma and other eye diseases and vision conditions. Our treatment combines Microsystem Acupuncture, Natural Medicine, and LED and Laser Therapy. Our team is lead by Gunnar Hansen, a medical doctor from Germany and a Doctor of Acupuncture in Alberta.

Dr. Hansen is the owner and Acupuncturist at Vision Acupuncture in Edmonton, Alberta. He specializes in the treatment of eye disease (Ophthalmology) and particularly in the treatment of degenerative vision loss. He graduated as MD from medical school in Kiel, Germany in 1990 and trained in the areas of Surgery, Psychiatry and Family Medicine.
Our health is a reflection of energetic balance in our body, mind and spirit. Traditional Chinese Medicine has created a system of diagnosing energetic imbalance that reflects or even precedes pain and disease in our bodies. Acupuncture originates and is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
We know that there are many factors that contribute to the whole health of a person. Nutrition & lifestyle support involves knowing the impact of good nutrition, exercise and stress on health and well-being: we often recommend our nutrition and lifestyle counselling. Sessions help clients to identify and make any necessary changes in their lives to support their getting well.
For most of our patients we will include LED and Low Level Laser Light therapy (Photobiomodulation) into their treatment, particularly in the case of of eye disease. Photobiomodulation is the exposure to a low-level laser light or light emitting diodes to stimulate cellular function leading to beneficial effects.
We specialise in treating Degenerative Eye Disease and common eye conditions with natural therapies. I am grateful on a daily basis for a friend’s referral to Dr. Gunnar Hansen for the double vision problems I experienced post cataract surgery. I am delighted, that for the first time in years, I can read things like traffic signs and text on a TV without closing one eye or risking the letters becoming skewed and jumbled. For the past 5 years my vision has been rapidly declining due to optic nerve neuropathy and Normal Tension Glaucoma. Various eye drop cocktails have not stabilized my vision loss and high risk eye surgery offers no solutions.

I spent 5 weeks in hospital with myacinia gravis and as a result my vision was blurry and I couldn't read texts, emails on my smartphone and when my eyes were tired all vision was blurry. I also have open angle glaucoma and prior to this myacinia it was like looking through a large cone.

Dr. Gunnar at Vision Acupuncture has saved my visual life.
I was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration and that is pretty scary.
I began treatment with Dr. Gunnar before I was treated medically and found that my vision was becoming sharper and clearer and that the over all health of my eyes was improving through acupuncture. It did not remove the macular but it strengthened my eyes and kept them healthy throughout this time of medical treatments. Which means that I am hardly aware of having macular as I see so well.
Also my medical doctor is pleased with how fast and steady my eyes are maintaining

I first visited Vision Acupuncture in November of 2017 to undergo the week long macular degeneration protocol. I had immediate improvement in my vision, but two years later, after attending refresher weeks every 6 months, I am thrilled that my vision is even better than it was then. From the time I first met Dr Hansen I have appreciated his approach of being a partner in my care team.
