Loss of interest or pleasure: An inability to experience pleasure and a lack of interest in previous hobbies, social activities, sex, and other experiences which would normally be pleasurable for them. Lack of self worth: Feelings of worthlessness or excessive, inappropriate guilt nearly every day.
Pregnant women often hear numerous well-wishes during their pregnancy. It's a common belief that pregnancy "should" be a happy time for women. As such, we rarely recognize or discuss the less joyful emotions that a woman may be experiencing during this time. Although we hear about postpartum depression, we rarely discuss prenatal depression.
After having a baby, many women have mood swings. One minute they feel happy, the next minute they start to cry. They may feel a little depressed, have a hard time concentrating, lose their appetite or find that they can't sleep well even when the baby is asleep. These symptoms usually start about 3 to 4 days after delivery and may last several days.
Emotion-focused therapy (or "EFT") is an experiential therapy that helps individuals experience, express, understand, and regulate their emotions. Due to our upbringing or the beliefs we've developed about various emotions, we may tend to suppress them or consider them invalid. We often fear certain emotions and when we experience them, we feel out of control.
