The word Shima means island and what better place to have such a restaurant than on Vancouver Island in Beautiful British Columbia. We are situated, at 1218 Wharf street, in one of the oldest and historically vibrant structures in Victoria. Originally occupied by James Yates, in 1853 it became The Ship Inn, a saloon and liquor warehouse, boasting the first license to sell booze in Victoria.

The stone walls, laid in a Halifax style, may have been built by the Hudson Bay Company French merchants.

A friend gave us a gift certificate for this restaurant a few years ago and I had misplaced it. Found it over the weekend so I decided to take my family out for dinner. Googled to see if the place was still open and yes, same name, address, phone number, web site and even the menu was the same (my friend attached a photocopy to the gift certificate) and NO EXPIRY DATE. We had a good dinner. Sushi was good, not the best, not the worst either. When we presented the gift certificate ($100.-) the waitress tells me it is not valid because they changed management. Then she proceeded to tell me that it

Shima is one of my favourite sushi restaurants in Victoria. I come here often with my girl friend and we've always had an excellent time. It's definitely our "go to" place. The sushi is delicious and the atmosphere of the restaurant/building is lovely. It's never busy and the service is always very pleasant. I would highly recommend going if you haven't tried it.

The sushi buffet though restrictive has good value and I would recommend it highly. When you get passed the condition you are served quality sashimi. Along with some tastey western friendly rolls and appetizers.
Wait staff is good and service seems to be good. It was a little slower when we went in but I would say they can handle a rush. The styling is interesting and there is a bit of a view though sadly the best part is blocked by a building.
Good atmosphere. I would recommend going buffet or not.

Small but wonderful sushi place. The service is always great, the fish is so fresh I don't know how they do it and the prices are so good I always keep going back for more!

Even though the restaurant does not look spectacular on the outside, it is a really nice place with a great view and a nice atmosphere. The sushi is delicious and the staff is friendly. Prices are reasonable. Also, during the day it isn't crowded at all - I'd definitely recommend it if you're in the mood for sushi.

First time ever for my wife and I. I have to say that it was the best Sushi ever. The reason for the less the 5 star review is the state of the carpet down the stairs....disgusting. Yuck...makes me wonder how clean and sanitary the kitchen really is when i see carpet this dirty.

My husband and I ate here tonight for the second time and loved it. Fast and friendly service, large portions in the sushi rolls, excellent sauce. Good price for how much food you get. Definitely don't understand the negative reviews. Will return. Our favorites are the Shima roll and the beef tataki.
