Dr. Swain offers counselling and psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, couples, and families. He also undertakes special assignments such as: Team Psychologist for the University of B.C. Thunderbird Men's basketball team. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Canadians will experience some sort of mental health difficulty.

This represents an awful lot of needless pain, suffering, and unmet human potential. Counselling and psychotherapy can help! Using a psychoeducational model of change, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy, I assist clients in gaining new understandings of themselves and others, improved emotional and physiological responses, and new skills and behaviours to deal more effectively with life challenges.

Stressful and traumatic life events affect people in different ways. People often find individual strategies to help them cope. Some people find writing about their thoughts and feelings to be helpful, while others use meditation and spiritual beliefs. The following are some general ideas that are likely to be helpful in building your resilience.
Are you feeling worried, tense, or irritable? Are you feeling tired or having difficulties with sleep? Do you have difficulty in concentrating or making decisions? Have you been feeling sad, down or depressed for the last month or more? Have you lost interest in things that normally give you pleasure?
Teenagers inhabit an ill-defined transitional space between the nursery and adult world which they cross and re-cross unpredictably. Their physical maturation provides them new abilities, interests, curiosities, and opportunities, particularly when they often appear much older than their years.

Their skills and access to electronic equipment tends to separate the generations, allowing them to create virtual worlds of their own to which their parents are excluded. They can appear to be very technologically savvy and are often more adept than their parents, which sometimes leads them to generalize that they know more about life than their parents.

Highly disappointing. While he has a kind demeanor and is patient, he didn't really understand what my family was going through. His guidance seemed immature and naive.
