Ontarians will now enjoy better access to eye health care now that optometrists can prescribe medications for sight-threatening conditions like eye infections and glaucoma. During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor does much more than just determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
We recommend that all patients bring along with them their current glasses, contact lenses, and their list of medications and allergies. An eye exam includes taking an accurate ocular and medical history, binocular vision testing, testing of visual status to see if glasses are required, and a thorough evaluation in and around the eyes.
As a parent, you may wonder whether your preschooler has a vision problem or when you should schedule your child's first eye exam. Eye exams for children are extremely important, because 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child's vision problem can be crucial because children often are more responsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed early.
Optometrists use a wide variety of tests and procedures to examine your eyes. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using a high-powered lens to visualize the tiny structures inside your eyes. Optometrists will determine if you require glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision.
The doctor will examine your eyes to determine the appropriate contact lens for your specific needs. A contact lens fitting includes a measurement of the curvature of your cornea, an accurate prescription, tear film evaluation, and will take into account your specific needs and requirements.
Once the contact lens selection is made, you will be taught how to handle, clean, and care for your contact lenses, including insertion and removal of the lenses. You will also be able to take them home and try them for approximately 1 week, paying particular attention to your visual demands at home and work.
