We strive to make our physical techniques pure expressions of our mind's intention, and to improve our mind's focus by understanding the essence of the physical techniques. By polishing our karate practice we are polishing our own spirit or our own mentality. For example, eliminating weak and indecisive movements in our karate helps to eliminate weakness and indecision in our minds and vice versa.
After years of study in both styles, master Funakoshi created a simpler system that combined the ideals of the two. He never named this style, however, always referring to it simply as "Karate." He was asked back several times in the following years, including by Japan's emperor in 1922, at which time Master Funakoshi decided to teach and promote his art in Japan.

Hirokazu Kanazawa, is one of the world's most renowned and respected traditional karate masters who held 10th Dan. He began training in karate at Takushoku University under head instructor of Shotokan karate, Masatoshi Nakayama. Kanazawa also learned from the founder of the Shotokan style, Gichin Funakoshi and is one of the few living karateka (practitioners of karate) to have done so.
Adding the suffix "Do" meaning "way, path" i.e., karate-do, implies karate as a total way of life that goes well beyond the self-defense applications. In traditional karate-do, we always keep in mind that the true opponent is oneself. The "Do" aspect happens in dojos, generally speaking.
If the motivation for your training is improved health, improved focus, the improved synthesis of body and mind, improved self-defense ability and you plan to stay with practice as part of your life for an indefinite period of time, you are practicing a "Do".Master Funakoshi also coined the term "Karate-Do", meaning "The Way of Karate".
