Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) has changed the way we license new drivers in Alberta. The GDL program ensures new drivers, regardless of age, get the support, skills and experience they need to handle the complex task of driving. The chart below outlines the program. Must be accompanied by a fully licensed (non-GDL probationary) driver who is 18 years of age or older and who is seated next to the driver.
In Alberta, there are seven different classes of driver licences. These licences allow you to do everything from learn to drive, operate a taxi or drive a commercial vehicle. It takes study and practice to be a safe driver. With the knowledge and skill that comes from education and training, drivers will become more aware of their responsibilities when behind the wheel and the role they play in improving traffic safety.
